about the event

Making a Film about Home

Filmmaking has become a more accessible self-expression medium thanks to our early exposure to video-making and social apps like TikTok, Youtube, and Instagram. But it also means that we're more geared towards making more fast-paced videos that will garner the most traction––not making videos/films that actually speak to people and encourage us to ask important questions.

In this masterclass, we'll be asking about the role of the documentary form as a creative form of self expression, and why is it important in sustaining a community? Through conversations and sharing about the history of moving images and examples of creative documentaries that effectively ask questions about modernity, identity and local history, we'll learn what are the right questions to ask ourselves as we document ourselves and our community. We'll also be learning to look at our community and home, and how to document fleeting moments around us in ways that give meaning. At the end of this session, participants are invited to a workshop to work on a series of short films about the Klang River’s personal significance to be screened at the end of the festival.
