about the ARTISTs

JEFFREY LIM
Jeffrey Lim engages in social art projects using cultural mapping, performative installation and photography. Utilizing forms of conceptual representation with imagery, found objects, and space. He is a communication designer by training and has been actively involved in cycling & accessibility advocacy. In the Klang River Kayaking expedition, Jeff played the role of navigator for the Klang River network for a project initiative by Ong Kian Ming. They circumnavigated down both main rivers, the Gombak and Klang rivers to investigate the socio-relationship of the people and the river. And also, to call upon a parliamentary status report on the Federal plan– River of Life. Here are a few videos that were made on the expedition and the people involved in the project.

KEN GOH
In his 22 years as a strategic art director and graphic designer, Ken’s advertising experience spans diverse disciplines and brands. His concepts are versatile, relevant, and at times experimental, to give different brands their style and personality. In early 2017, Ken realized his calling to do more with Art – hence, his belief in collaborating with different artists to champion the Arts as a voice for brand building while giving back to the community through sustainable ways.

Plus, Community Partnership conceptualized the SENSORY PHOTOGRAPHY™ programme and in early 2018, a collaboration began with the Malaysian Association of the Blind (MAB) and Studio DL Photography. The objective is to empower the visually impaired with the opportunity to explore an activity they previously had no access to. Firstly, the SENSORY PHOTOGRAPHY™ programme is centred on Photography as a channel for self-expression. Secondly, it could lead to an additional source of income.

SHAQ KOYOK
Shaq is a contemporary artist from the indigenous Temuan tribe of Selangor. Temuan has a population of 29,000 in peninsula Malaysia. In his early life, land developers encroached on the jungle around his village and this experience is reflected in his many works. That trauma from his childhood has fueled his passion and led him to fight for his people's land rights. He loves to explore many art mediums from contemporary painting to installation art.

“In a rapidly modernising Malaysian state, I’m always trying to capture the tension and pressure faced by my people, whose lives interact with and respect the natural environment. My work emphasizes the inequalities that exist between modern consumerism and traditional sustainable ways of life. My paintings are a reflection of my people and the rain forest in which I grew up, and to show the importance of nature to the Orang Asal. The presentation of artwork also captures a contemporary view of the struggle faced by Malaysia’s indigenous people and the aim is to contribute to a deeper understanding of multiracial Malaysia.”
