about the event

The Klang River basin is fed by several tributaries. Sunda Shelves presents a half-day event on Sunday 24 November from its location near the headwaters of Sungai Penchala, one of the tributaries of the Klang River.

Here, we take a broader view of the Klang Valley, using rivers and ecosystems as our reference point, featuring talks and a panel discussion on historical fiction and oral histories.

  • Re-imagining the city: A dialogue about
the Klang Valley and its representations
by William Tham and Dennis Ong

William Tham and Dennis Ong will discuss what it means to engage with Kuala Lumpur and its environs through their work. Whether through oral history or creative writing, their respective initiatives aim to represent places in ways that depart from official narratives.

  • The adaptive reuse of the original
    Victoria Institution using innovative approaches
by Ir Dr Kribanandan Gurusamy Naidu

The former Victoria Institution now called the Kompleks Taman Budaya on Jalan Tun H S Lee was originally built in 1893. In 2002 the building was in ruins, having deteriorated over time. This presentation illustrates an example of innovative adaptive reuse to convert a school with closely spaced columns to an open structure required for an Auditorium.

  • Revisualising the Old Damansara Road
by Peter Leong, Surin Suksuwan & Dylan Jefri Ong

In the old days, the only practical way to KL from Klang was by boat, disembarking at the Damansara jetty. From there, the journey would continue along the old Damansara road. Peter Leong and friends have been piecing together information to re-visualise the Old Damansara Road and identify stretches of it that still exist.
